Sketches from Ibiza

It was great to be back in Ibiza this summer. As a place it constantly inspires. I really wanted to share some of the drawings from my trip and recommend a few favourite places on the island.

Las Salinas beach (Ses Salines)

I enjoy nothing more than a sunny afternoon at the beach with my sketchbook. One of my favourite beaches in Ibiza is Las Salinas. I have visited at different times of the year and it never disappoints. I enjoy walking to the beach from Sant Francesc de s'Estany church, exploring the salt flats on route. Then walking along the coast from Es Cavallet to reach Las Salinas.

Jockey Club bar on Las Salinas beach

When I visit Las Salinas for the day, I love nothing more than popping into the Jockey Club beach bar for some great seafood and a cheeky margarita, which they serve in a chalice like vessel. The chocolate dessert is also delicious and a great pick me up if like me you need that sweet fix after swimming. The views from here are brilliant for drawing, ideally to a soundtrack provided by DJ Pippi. I can happily spend a couple of hours here soaking up the atmosphere.

La Oliva restaurant

One of my favourite places to sit and draw in the old town of Ibiza is the restaurant La Oliva. Situated in the heart of the old town on a hill with narrow views sloping down to the main square it is a great place to people watch. The restaurant has charming rows of quaint wooden tables.

Portal de ses Taules

The enchanting main entrance to Dalt Vila, the fortified old city of Ibiza. The fortification was built between 1584 and 1585 to protect Puig de Vila, the highest part of the Ibizan capital. A cobbled stone ramp leads you up to the gates which form part of the UNESCO world heritage site. The beautiful entrance is situated between the bastions of Sant Joan and Santa Llúcia. Either side of the gates are Roman statues and above them sits the coat of arms of Phillip II. In the evening pretty lights illuminate the area and music drifts through the air as a busker plays romantic classics on the pan pipes. I enjoy looking down to the market square and watching the world go by from here.

Ibiza town marina

Another favourite spot for drawing is the port of Ibiza. The marina is very majestic at night as the lights of the city sparkle and dance on the water. There are lots of places to sit and draw on the pier which offers 360 views of the surroundings. I love looking toward the old town and also out to sea especially when there is a full moon, and the stars are visible in the sky.

Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera square

Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera is a small, charming village in the centre of Ibiza. It has always been popular with artists. Make sure you visit the famous Bar Costa where huge paintings adorn the walls inside. Legend has it that artists used to swap artworks for sandwiches. I don’t blame them they are so delicious! I also really love the Church Església de Santa Gertrudis.
